My partner and two teenage daughters went on a full-day private tour of the Apartheid Museum and Soweto, with Khutso and his intern Sipho as our guides. It was hands down one of the best tours I have ever experienced. Khutso was a fantastic navigator, extraordinary communicator, highly knowledgeable of the history and culture and also has a great sense of humour. He knew all the right places to go and we all learnt so much on the way. The Apartheid Museum was incredible. I didn’t think we would need 2 hours - we could have taken even longer - brilliant and harrowing and deeply emotive. So important to learn the history and extent of damage done over so long. The insider’s tour of a Soweto shanty town was done by Hope, a local resident, who brought colour and depth to the reality of daily life there. Visiting the pre-school and getting to go inside one of the snacks were great ways to get a feel for the community and the harsh realities of life well below the breadline. I wish I had more cash on me at the time - there was a man selling some souvenirs as we left and I would have loved to support him. Our lunch at the Orlando Towers was fabulous. So vibrant with music and many dancing and the food was authentic and delicious. Our final stop at the Hector Pietersen museum was sobering and a reminder again of the history of South Africa and the fight for human rights. I cannot recommend this tour highly enough and especially want to thank Khutso for being a warm and wonderful guide.
