    The Kanheri Caves are a group of caves and rock-cut monuments cut into a massive basalt outcrop in the forests of the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, on the island of Salsette in the western outskirts of Mumbai, India. They contain Buddhist sculptures and relief carvings, paintings, and inscriptions, dating from the 1st century BCE to the 10th century CE. Kanheri comes from the Sanskrit Krishnagiri, which means black mountain.

We did a Kahneri Cave tour with Ganesh and had a remarkable time. His knowledge and presentation of information about the caves was phenomenal. The caves are a must-see. At the top, there is a breathtaking view of Mumbai, fantastic for panoramic photos. The hike is very mild, and a very nice opportunity to take in some nature amid the urban surrounding. P.S., don't feed the monkeys. They tried to swipe an orange from us (and failed) ????

Great experience with Arunbhai and Ganesh as guide. Well organised, caves are well worth a visit and so is the National park. Highly recommended!
