We just got back from 2-day trip to the Chernobyl Exclusion Zone and we highly recommend it.
The highlight for us was Pripyat and the 4-hour walk we did through the town. It’s amazing to see how nature has taken over this place but also a pity to see how it was vandalized. We were also impressed by the DUGA radar system and its surroundings.
Things to bear in mind:
- on the day we travelled there was only one policeman at the Exclusion Zone “border”, so we waited 1,5 hours to be able to cross (there are quite a few tourist buses coming, I think we counted around 12 ahead of us).
- the food served throughout the trip is quite bland and not appealing (and comes in all shades of brown), so bring lots of snacks.
- toilet stops are far and few (always bring tissues with you).
- the hotel was actually not that bad, very clean, but bring an extra sweater/jumper in case you get cold.
- download or get a map of the region as we didn’t get a brief of what we were going to do or see and I think having a map in hand would’ve been helpful.
