Everyone should visit this place......I wondered if the people of Krakow and surrounding areas wanted to not be associated with the camp as there is so much beauty in the City itself with it's architecture, parks, mountains etc. However there is an understandable determination that nobody should every forget the horror created here. Children are taught about it in school and as the Nazis wanted it to be a part of history which didn't exist, there is a determination this isn't the case - it should be remembered, for the suffering and the courage.
Our guide spoke with compassion, huge emotion and conveyed to us the daily life of the people imprisoned here. An extremely moving, informative and humbling experience we will never forget.
On the practical side of the tour, communication about start times and pick up location was clear. A 6.30am start took us on a comfortable 1.5 hours coach ride out of the city. It was pleasant to see the villages outside of Krakow. The coach driver ensured we knew where to queue. It is very busy first thing and the queue was long however it moved quite swiftly and once you were in and past the security it was a lot less frantic. A guide meets you at this point, headphones were very clear and the small groups are led throughout the camp with dignity and respect shown to the extremely moving exhibits.
