I have lived on islands my entire life: born in Brooklyn, raised in Queens, and living most of my life in Manhattan. Yet, unexpectedly, my connection to the water is stronger in Poland: the large and beautiful lakes of northeast Poland, and now this rafting ride on the Polish-Slovak border. I have used Krzysztof Blaszczyk services several times on my twice-annual visits to Lower Poland (“Malopolska”). He is considerate, prompt, friendly, knowledgeable, and efficient. I enjoyed his company on this 7-hour-plus day from Krakow to the southern Polish border. The waters of the river were calm much of the time, with occasional rough patches of white-water rapids. Thus, I felt safe during the entire 2-hour, 20-minute journey. You’re in a gorge, so there’s rocky hills and abundant greenery during the rafting ride. The professional park 2-person team who staffed the wooden raft provided almost non-stop narration, sprinkled with good- sturgeon humor, judging from the chuckles of the rest of the passengers; alas, this was in Polish, so I benefited only from the feeling that I was safe and amongst nice people. It was chilly for this time of year, but Kris alerted me to the need for appropriate clothing. The park provides plastic parka-like covering for a nominal fee in case of rain. The weather on my trip ran the gamut from bright sunshine to cloudy skies to light drizzle. It is a long day, but a very pleasant and enjoyable one for anyone who likes beautiful scenery and being on the water.
