4 hour Private Lake District tour (tour A)

We took a 4 hour tour with our two year old daughter as a way to see the Lake District. Our Guide had lots of knowledge of the area, was very funny and easy to get along with. Everyone (including our 2 year old) had an enjoyable day. We saw a lot more than we would have seen on our own, and got tips for what we could do on the rest of our trip.

Our guide, and owner of Brooks Tours, David, arrived promptly at our hotel and greeted us with an enthusiastic and warm welcome to “the most beautiful area in England”, The Lakes District. We had previously emailed and discussed what we wanted to see and do. David had a wealth of information to share so we decided to book him for two mornings. He would have done an all day tour but we preferred to break it up into two half days. We wanted to “see his countryside” with some literary highlights of Wordsworth and Beatrice Potter, some country villages with their charm, and some hidden secrets that only a local would know. Although David also does extensive recreational walking and hiking tours, we chose to take just a few short walks to see the secret views and waterfalls known by David. We were totally impressed with the historical, social, and personal knowledge David had as he drove and shared information with us. Driving through the countryside on the narrow roads, we felt comfortable and confident moving from site to site seeing hidden gardens, glorious mansions, and hearing the history behind each place. David explained differences in geographic terms as he named the various fells (mountains and hills) and valleys. We stopped at charming villages to stretch our legs and popped in specialty shops for treats ( gingerbread in Grasmere is a must!). We took short walks to see exquisite views of the countryside. We turned down narrow roads to discover breathtaking gardens. Each morning was varied from the other. Time flew by so quickly. We enjoyed every minute!! At the end of each morning, David would drop us in the town of our choice after making several recommendations for lunch spots. Through David’s expert narrative, we came to appreciate the Lakes so much more. We plan to return next summer to spend even longer and our first call will be to David at Brooks Tours.

We found the tour full of history and beautiful sights, as well as off-the-beaten path gems you wouldn’t see on your own. We had our 15 month old daughter with us and David was incredibly flexible when we needed to stop or take more time at certain points in the trip. This is a must-do for your itinerary in the Lakes!
