I recently returned from a 3 night stay in Lalibela where Daniel was my tour guide throughout my stay. He designed a great itinerary for us (6 people -my wife and I, my 2 aging parents, and my 2 young kids) and did a fantastic job explaining why these churches and this city is so special and important.
I have been to 44 countries around the world and all 7 continents, and this was the most authentic cultural experience of my life. The cultural immersion here, especially during Holy Week, is unparalleled. If you are on the fence on whether you should come or not, then be assured that its worth it. And book your experience with Daniel. He is a must if you want the greatest experience here in Lalibela.
Amazing Lalibela with a very competent guide!
We had a great trip, Lalibela is a must if you visit Ethiopia, an extraordinary site. We also liked the countryside and the local market and there are many others things to do and visit.
Daniel is very well organized, knowledgeable and he can tailor your trip based on your family/personal situation. He can also organize tours outside Lalibela. He had a very reliable and nice driver, and a comfortable van.
Don’t worry about safety or electricity problems. Lalibela is very safe and local hotels and restaurants are managing with alternative energy options. Daniel can also help with advice for good restaurants, hotels etc.
We did the four-day tour of the 11 rock-hewn churches of Lalibela (UNESCO World Heritage Site), Yemrehana Krestos, Asheton Mariam monastery, and got an added bonus of seeing the busy marketplace of Lalibela on Saturday. Daniel is an amazing tour guide, very prompt, accommodating and knowledgeable. His English is also very good, so you can have meaningful conversations about what you are seeing. I was taken aback by his passion for and knowledge of the history of the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela. He even arranged for us to see and be blessed by the famous golden Lalibela cross. I am not religious, but it was a unique experience. My family and I were able to witness and understand how the churches are connected (tunnels, trenches, etc.), the architectural style and how it varies between them, and some of the history of Ethiopia (e.g. the Zagwe dynasty of which King Lalibela was a part). Daniel could explain everything you were looking at if you have a question. He was also very patient with us as we have kids, and helped arrange every accommodation possible for their wellbeing and safety. His connections also allowed the priests of every church we visited to speak with my family, some of whom are religious, more in depth about the religious aspects of the churches. Daniel is very well connected with the Lalibela community in terms of friendship with the locals and even family ties.
As a more secular guy myself, my favorite part of the journey had to be the trek to Asheton Mary monastery, which involved gorgeous views, interactions with the locals, a breathtaking hike up amazing trails, and a semi-monolithic monastery. The views and the experience at such a high altitude were absolutely stunning. I also enjoyed seeing the incredibly packed marketplace selling all sorts of goods, including spices, teff, etc. I was also happy to finally ride in a tuk-tuk (the local taxi with three wheels). If you visit Lalibela or anywhere in the surrounding northern region of Ethiopia, you have to book Daniel. He knows Ethiopia and its history inside and out, and can ensure your entire trip runs smoothly and happily.
