This unique 2 day tour is a guided tour of 11 monolithic churches carved out of rock in the 12th century. These churches in Lalibela were built as a New Jerusalem at time when Jerusalem was inaccessible. Visitors will be picked up at the airport, dropped off at their hotel for lunch on their own then taken to the Northern group of churches followed by a museum visit. The 2nd day begins with a 42 kilometer trip to the Yimrehane Krestos church built in a cave. This beautiful church built of wood and stone predates the rock-hewn churches of Lalibela by eighty years. At the back of that cave can be seen some of the centuries old mumified remains of 5,500 pilgrims. A village nearby is optional as the visitor returns to Lalibela for lunch at their hotel and the afternoon tour of the Southeastern cluster of churchs and Bet Giyorgis (St. George) constructed in honor of St. George, the patron saint of Ethiopia. Pick up occurs the following morning after breakfast for transfer to the airport.

An excellent tour. Chris had good English and a sense of humour and was an informed guide. The tour was in Jan/Feb 2020.

Chris was an excellent guide the entire trip. He helped us find a hotel, arranged airport pick up and gave us a full rundown of our choices and activities for the tour. We opted for the hike and he was with us the whole way. Best part was it felt like it was an experience for him as well. He enjoyed the hike as much as we did. Chris regularly offered to take our photos during the hike and took regularly breaks to help us adjust to the altitude. Chris was very knowledgable on all the churches and was able to answer any questions we had. My wife and I have already agreed to return during the rainy season so we can see the city and churches in a new light.

Lidetu a été un guide incroyable tout du long de la visite! Francophone, ce qui nous a bien aidé, il a su nous transmettre sa connaissance encyclopédique de la zone à dose d'anecdotes et hauts faits. C'est également un très bon conteur, qui a pu répondre à mes questions pointilleuses sur les origines de Lalibela et la différence entre la légende et les faits historiques. En bref, guide parfait, également d'excellent conseil par rapport aux restaurants en ville, qu'on souhaite manger local, international ou un peu des deux ????
