I visited Leeds Castle recently as part of a week-long trip where I toured six different castles. Leeds was the sixth one, and unfortunately, it left me with the worst impression.
At every other castle, I was able to enjoy my visit without issue. I wore a dress to each one, and not a single staff member questioned me. However, at Leeds Castle, within just five minutes of arriving, I was approached and challenged twice in an unnecessarily confrontational way.
The first staff member stopped me and asked if I was there for a professional photoshoot, stating that I was “clearly dressed for one” and that I could be “a distraction for other visitors.” I explained that I was simply there with my family – my sister, my father, and my 11-year-old child – and that I would only be taking photos on my iPhone. Hardly the setup for a professional shoot. I was then told that I “might be stopped again” throughout the castle. I brushed it off, determined to enjoy the day.
Less than 30 seconds later, however, another staff member approached me in a far more aggressive manner. With raised voice, wide eyes, arms gesturing, and even flared nostrils, they repeated the same questions but escalated things further by warning me that if I used a tripod, I would be “kicked out.” Not simply asked to leave – they emphasized the words “KICKED OUT OF THE PREMISES” at least three times in a tone that was genuinely intimidating.
I want to stress: it’s not just what was said, but how it was said. The tone and body language of the staff member were unprofessional, unnecessarily hostile, and frankly, frightening. I have visited numerous castles and heritage sites, and I always respect the rules around photography. I clearly explained that I was there for a family day out, not a photoshoot, and yet I was treated as if I was breaking rules simply because of my clothing choice.
After paying a significant amount for tickets, plus spending in the gift shop and restaurant, my experience was overshadowed by this treatment. Wearing a dress to visit a castle should not feel like committing a crime. Sadly, the aggressive approach and poor attitude of the staff let down what should have been a memorable and enjoyable day with my family.
