Miradouro Pico Dos Barcelos, Funchal, Portugal You will start your tour at Belvedere. Pico dos Barcelos has an observation point on the edge of Funchal, it is 355m (1165 ft). There’s a magnificent view across Funchal from the top of the viewpoint, at which you will stop for about 15 minutes. 20 minutes
Miradouro Eira do Serrado, Camara De Lobos, Portugal You will then head to Eira do Serrado, overlooking “Curral das Freiras” a horse shoe shaped valley far below. The Views have three sheer sides that cut into the serrated peaks of Madeira. Here, Madeira’s highest mountain was mistakenly believed to have been a volcanic crater. It is now known that its dramatic geographical shape was created by the river itself. From there, you can admire the tiny terraced fields which grow wine, fruit and vegetables and the slopes far below with sweet chestnut trees. You will stop there for around 30 minutes.

Valley of the Nuns, Curral das Freiras, Portugal Next, you will venture forth to the Village of Nuns Valley - Curral das Freiras. The valley is situated in a huge natural amphitheater, surrounded by some of Madeira’s highest peaks. The village was founded in the 16th century by the nuns of the convent of “Santa Clara” in Funchal, from where the nuns fled from pirate attacks in 1566. We went on the 4 hour trip to see Nuns Valley. Our driver/guide( Acifrindo ) was excellent. He made the tour very enjoyable with his in depth knowledge of Madeira and showing us many points of interest. The valley is stunning, even in the rain. This is a great trip at a very reasonable cost.

We had already booked a full day tour and wanted a shorter option. Nuns Valley fitted the bill and didn't disappoint. Again picked up in Canico, by Luis a very friendly guide/driver. we had to pick up others, in Funchal, but were soon on our way into the mountains. There are only 3 stops on the tour, but we picked a good day for weather and had time to stop and admire the amazing views and take picutres. Luis gave us enough local information and negotiated the mountain roads easily, including a bonus stop in a lay by for the view. The actual town in Nuns Valley is not that impressive, but we did try the Poncha and Chestnut cake.
We got back to our hotel for lunch. The trip was approx 4.5 hours, due to us being 20 min from Funchal. But many other operators don't pick up outside the Capital. So another great service. I definitely don't want to drive on their roads.
