Did you know that Madrid was originally founded by Mohammed I of Cordoba as a line of defence against Christian invaders to the north? While the citadel was eventually conquered by Alfonso VI in 1083, only the ruling classes and military of Al-Andaluz were forced to flee. Muslim citizens stayed on in a morería for centuries. Starting where the original fortress was built, this tour follows the fate of the city's Islamic community from when Madrid was part of Al-Andalus up until the forced conversions of 1502.

This was such a great tour! So interesting to discover how Madrid was established as a frontier fortress to guard against the incursions from the Christians in the north. I loved the way Felicity had found out unexpected evidence of Moorish life in the city, such as the remains of one of the defence towers in the basement of a very ordinary car park! The is certainly a tour that takes you away from Spanish cliches, treating the topic with objectivity and insight. I'd definitely do this tour if I was visiting Madrid as it covers a period that is often overlooked by mainstream tour agencies, who often forget that their city is the only European capital to have been founded by Muslims.

Very interesting tour. Felicity showed the group remains from Moorish Madrid, several of which are not obvious or easy to find, in a friendly and pleasant way.
