We left the Plaza de Conde Casal (Madrid) at 8:30 in the morning accompanied by our guide. Our first stop will be Segóbriga, one of the most important Roman cities in the interior of Spain and which maintains some of its most characteristic structures, such as the forum, the baths, the theater and the amphitheatre. We will continue to one of the biggest attractions in the area, the Lapis Specularis mines. The Romans exploited this material, which was used mainly as window glass and exported throughout the empire as a true luxury item, generating great wealth throughout the mining area. We will stop for lunch in the city of Cuenca, where we will enjoy some free time. We will end our visit with a guided visit to the mosaics of the Villa Romana de Noheda. In this villa is the most impressive and extensive historiated mosaic that is preserved from the Roman Empire, with about 300 square meters of extension. After this last visit, we will return to Madrid, where we will arrive around 7:30 p.m.

  • Segobriga Archaeological Park, Saelices, Spain
    Roman city of Segobriga. This archaeological site is one of the most important and best preserved Roman remains in Spain. The Roman city of Segobriga was the commercial and economic center of the mining of Lapis Specularis. Lapis Specularis is a variety of gypsum that forms sheets of glass and was used as the first window panes in history. The Lapis Specularis became highly demanded by the richest families in the empire, and economic growth allowed the monumentalization of the city. There were only seven Roman cities in Hispania with a Theatre, Amphitheater and Circus, and Segóbriga was one of them. The city's economy collapsed when the technique of making sheet glass was developed and demand for the Lapis Specularis ceased.
