I can't believe this activity doesn't have more and higher ratings!
If you're going to Nerja, you absolutely must do this walk. My wife and I (both in our 60s) walked up the Rio Chillar river and it was one of the most incredible experiences we've had anywhere. The water was at most about 1 foot deep (.3 meter) so it was pretty easy walking. At some points the water was rushing a little bit, but we never felt any danger at all.
You'll start with easy walking on a trail next to the river and then gradually transition into walking right up the middle of the creek (it's more of a "creek" than a river). Eventually, with the 4-hour round-trip walk, you'll go through canyons that are about 5 feet across and 100 feet long. At other times the canyon is 30 feet across and you can walk next to the river. Pretty much every point is incredible for being in nature and seeing some beautiful scenery.
Our guide, Manuel, speaks English well and was able to tell us not only about the canyon, its history, the wildlife and flora, but also about his childhood memories of doing this same walk with his friend. He was very hospitable and helpful, even taking my wife's hand through some of the higher steps (she's fairly short). He absolutely made the trip the best it could be.
So, if you're in Nerja, don't miss the caves (highly advertised) but also don't miss the walk up the Rio Chillar!
