We were picked up from our hotel in Casablanca - the driver was already waiting for us when we came down to reception and all our luggage had already been loaded.
It was an extremely windy day in Casablanca with trees uprooted and on the streets but our driver, Mostafa, couldn’t have been more safer. We weee on our way to Marrakech and after a couple of hours of our drive on the highway we were met and overwhelmed with a massive sandstorm that brought visibility down to a few feet.
These are the times when you are grateful for a safe and confident driver and a fabulous car ( a Mercedes Benz van). Mostafa knew exactly how to navigate driving through the sand storm and, best of all, he knew exits off the highway to pull into rest areas where we would wait for 30-45 min for the storm to abate and visibility to rise again.
We saw maybe 50-60 accidents on the highway. Trucks that had ploughed into tour buses, cars, even Mercedes Benz sedans and Audi station wagons, crashed into each other, and many cars and buses just swerved off the road and fallen into ditches. It was mayhem.
We couldn’t have been more respectful of professional driving. Mostafa didn’t miss a beat. He reassured us that he had driven through such storms before and that he wanted to be safe. He was very personable too - a good man with a kind soul, and so young.
When we finally got to Marrakech a few hours later we reflected on our journey and Mostafa’s masterful and safe driving. We can’t be more thankful for his skills and attitude.
Anyone can drive anyone at any time. But when it’s stormy weather you want Mostafa at the wheel.
