    The tour goes around the Caveoso District of the Sassi of Matera. During the tour, it's possible to visit one cave dwelling and one church. At the end of the tour, you can visit the part of the historical center with Baroque churches. Approach Matera from virtually any direction and your first glimpse of its famous Sassi is sure to stay in your memory forever. Haunting and beautiful, the Sassi sprawl below the rim of a yawning ravine like a giant nativity scene. The old town is simply unique and warrants at least a day of exploration and aimless wandering. Although many buildings are crumbling and abandoned, others have been restored and transformed into cozy abodes, restaurants, and swish cave-hotels. On the cliff top, a new town is a lively place, with its elegant churches, palazzi and especially the pedestrianized Piazza Vittorio Veneto.

i stayed at Bari so i organized my own transport to Matera via the bus. arrived earlier just in case, and ended up waiting for another half an hour after the scheduled time. as i didn't see other tour groups around, i was beginning to get anxious if the tour was cancelled without my knowledge. i called the local tour operator repeatedly - unfortunately as it was a Sunday; no one was answering! i also called Viator where i booked the tour from - but there wasn't much they could do but to lodge a report. i was rather upset as i came all the way from Bari and thought at the very least i should go wander around the sassi by myself. just when i was about to leave from the waiting point, a lady suddenly appeared and called my name. what a relief; she was my tour guide - and was surprised the tour operator didn't pre-empt me about the new delayed time as she was on another tour before. i was too thankful to be angry with the whole situation! the best part was, i turned out to be the only person for this tour and yet the tour guide (sorry i left her namecard but i think her name is Maria) was fantastic!!! as a local, her in-depth knowledge of the sassi was really impressive coupled with animated story-telling. happy the weather was great as it was forecasted to rain. overall, this tour is highly recommended - one of the most beautiful (in a very raw sort of way) ancient cities i've ever visited out of the many European ones. super picturesque in every angle... enjoy the pix!

Um lugar imperdível. Diferente de tudo mas, para quem gosta de história antiga, vai ter uma noção da vida nas cavernas feitas nas pedras (SASSIS). Um pouco cansativo porém vale visitar. Para descansar um pouco, aconselho pegar um CALESINO (pequeno veículo motorizado).Os motoristas são ótimos guias como ANDRÉA. MATERA é a capital Cultural da Europa em 2019. Tem, ainda, a parte moderna e bem desenvolvida.
