    Una cruz metálica se levanta sobre un pedestal que se asoma por fuera del agua verde del embalse Peñol – Guatapé. Es la señal de que allí yace un pueblo. Es el punto que marca el lugar donde hasta 1978 se encontraba la iglesia del viejo Peñol, el municipio del oriente del departamento de Antioquia que desapareció con el fin de convertirse en parte de un depósito diseñado para contener 1.220 millones de metros cúbicos de agua. Luego de ser inundados por el río Nare, algunos de los valles más fértiles de la región pasaron a ser el fondo del espejo de agua más grande del país. Como resultado, 6.365 hectáreas de tierra cultivable se transformaron en una vasija gigantesca para contener agua y, con el paso de los años, en un sitio atractivo donde es frecuente ver pequeños barcos llenos de turistas.

    En 1988, en una alianza entre el dueño de la roca y el Alcalde de Guatapé, iniciaron en la roca la pintura con el nombre de GUATAPÉ; no obstante, debido a que la piedra fue durante un tiempo parte del territorio del Peñol y aún sigue siendo parte de su identidad, dicho municipio logró que se detuviera esto con la ley 23 de 1973, según la cual no se puede pintar ni tachar ningún lugar turístico natural.

    I want to thank ATOTOURS for this great experience my boyfriend and i are from boston and we wanted to know guatape. Thanks to David our tour guide and driver because he show us every corner with his kindness and patience. Without a doubt in a next visit we will call you again.

    The guide named David arrived at pick up point on time and is very informative and friendly along the way. The van is not luxuary but the driving is safe and generally comfortable. Nice tour designed with flexibility (not pursuing time). Will recommend to other people who does not have local friends to guide.

    The tour guide was nice but the tour itself is overpriced! Our friends went on the same tour but with a different company for 1/3 of the price. So check other companies. Also, the law in Columbia states that you can receive 19-20% tax refund on tours if you provide a copy of your passport. I called the company to ask them where I can email this info so I can get my refund. The guy on the phone pretended he did not understand and hung up on me which is to me bad customer service.
