Take a walk through downtown Melbourne and learn of an era in which there was much more on offer at the local confectionery store than just lollies and soft drinks. Explore Melbourne’s underworld c.1870’s to 1930’s, an era in which Melbourne’s downtown slum district, ‘Little Lon’, was mostly run by women. Learn about the battle for supremacy, madams who stood their ground against well-known gangsters such as Squizzy Taylor, and an all-female crime syndicate known as ‘The Combine’. Stop outside buildings which were once brothels and sly grog shops (speak easies), and hear the stories of what occurred within their walls and on the streets and laneways around them. Shootings, bombings, bashings, brothels, robberies, opium, cocaine and sly grog (speak easies). The tour is designed and delivered by writer and historian, Michael Shelford.

Michael is indeed very knowledgeable on the history of crimes, gangsters and lolly shops of Melbourne. He made the 2 hour walking tour worth our striving in the cold weather with his wit and humour interwoven in his clear narration of the infamous characters and their illicit activities. Ohhh we had to reschedule our date at the last minute, and Michael was very understanding and accommodating. Thank you, Michael, for such an awesome historical walking????????????????????????

The tour guide, Michael, is very knowledgeable about the historical nature of the area. He gives a nonstop commentary which is interesting and tells us about not only the significance of the area and its old buildings, but also the characters who lived there. The tour is over a two hour period and covers a fairly small area of a few city blocks so it is not hard for people who may have trouble walking. ( I had a toe to knee cast and found the walking very easy as there are a few stops along the way).

Tour was very interesting and informative. We really enjoyed it, and would recommend. However, Melbourne in June - make sure you dress warmly!
