Μετεώρων, Kalampaka 422 00, Greece The Holy Monastery of St. Barbara Roussanou is a Greek Orthodox monastery located in the Meteora region of Greece, near the town of Kalambaka. It is one of six functioning monasteries in the area and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. 10 minutes
Meteoron, Kalampaka 422 00, Greece The Holy Monastery of Varlaam, the second largest monastery in Meteora. It’s also a great example of how important defense was to the monks who built these monasteries. 10 minutes
Kalabaka 422 00, Greece Up ahead is the Holy Monastery of Great Meteoron, the largest monastery in Meteora. Like some of the other monasteries, it also has a second name, ‘The Metamorphosis of the Saviour’ monastery.
But this monastery isn’t just big. It’s also the whole reason there are so many incredible monasteries in the first place!

Kalabaka 422 00, Greece The history of this monastery is a little sketchy, in part because it was built by different people at many different time periods. Some evidence suggests the earliest construction may have begun in the mid-1300s, but the bulk of the monastery likely dates back to sometime around the 1470s. 10 minutes
ΑΓΙΑ ΜΕΤΕΩΡΑ, Kalampaka 422 00, Greece This is the most accessible of Meteora’s many monasteries, so don’t worry about climbing another 100 or two steps for this one! All you need to do to access it, is to cross a sturdy stone bridge. The Monastery of Saint Stephen is also simultaneously one of the oldest and newest monasteries in Meteora. 10 minutes
