    Milford’s second-highest waterfall is the Stirling Falls, a staggering 151m in height – three times the height of Niagara Falls, but the 1,300m mountain behind displaces this incredible height. This is the famous waterfall that Hugh Jackman ‘jumped off’ in the movie Wolverine. The sheer drop of the Stirling Falls allows boats to get right underneath – it’s an incredible feeling to have the power of 151m worth of glacial water falling so close to you.

    Nestled behind the world famous Mitre Peak, the Sinbad Gully is characterised by extremely steep glacially carved walls punctuated by near vertical granite cliffs. These walls slowed pest invasion into the gully and as a result a number of unique native species remain in the Sinbad. Southern Discoveries is passionate about preserving Milford Sound’s beauty for future generations which is why it’s a key partner in a major conservation project – the Sinbad Sanctuary Project. The aim is to see the valley of New Zealand’s most photographed mountain (Sinbad Gully is at the base of Mitre Peak) become a sanctuary for native species.

Arriving a bit frazzled after making a mistake with my booking, I found the team at Southern Discoveries incredibly friendly and helpful, getting me sorted quickly and on the bus. We had a fantastic trip with Sonia at the wheel, as she told us of local trivia and folklore - I learnt quite a bit about farming and really enjoyed the local legend of the giant’s heartbeat and it’s impact on the waters of Lake Wakatipu. Sonia took us to multiple stops along the way, and I managed to snag some great photos. Milford Sound itself is beautiful, and I know understand why a long list of family members recommended the trip. If you get the chance to go, take it. The Southern Discovery Team were great. Thanks again for all of your help Sonia - ‘shorts’

This was an amazing experience with breathtaking scenery and a wonderful guide. It was a long day but definitely worth it!

We booked this full day experience that would take us on a return journey from Queenstown to Milford Sound. The bus journey was amazing, the landscapes you will see are truly breathtaking. Our driver did an awesome job at providing us with running commentary along the way, but also mindful that people also wanted to rest. We learnt so much - the difference between a sound and fiord, the number of waterfalls you can see, geological, geographical and historical information. Along the way we also stop for toilet breaks, a longer break to grab some breakfast and coffee at Te Anau, and we stopped at many locations along the way to take some amazing photos. Once in Milford Sound we jumped on the large boat and did an almost 2hr cruise around the sound. We sat down to a full buffet lunch, and the food definitely didn't dissapoint, my fav for the day was the crispy pork belly (wow). The cruise had running commentary and again, learnt so much about how Milford Sound was created and the unique wildlife that live within the area. We saw so many beautiful waterfalls, and everywhere you looked, you just gaze in awe at how spectacular the whole area is. We were unlucky to see dolphins and whales on this trip, but we did see a few seals and penguins which was cool. After the cruise, we boarded the bus and journeyed back to Queenstown. We left at 7am, were in Milford Sound close to 1pm, carried out the water cruise, boarded the bus around 3pm, and were back in Queenstown just after 7pm. Highly recommend doing this experience, perfect if you don't have your own transport, or are a little hesitant to drive all the way out (especially in winter where you need to be mindful of black frost and avelanches).
