The Minho Full-Day Tour includes the visit to Braga and Bom Jesus Sanctuary, followed a short stop at the medieval village of Ponte de Lima, before lunch in Arcos de Valdevez. In the afternoon we will proceed with a guided tour to the Brejoeira Palace and Vinho Verde Estate in the Monção Region. Before returning to Porto we will stop at Viana do Castelo to visit the city center and taste the famous "Bolas de Berlim" in the city center.     From your hotel in Porto, you’re picked up in the morning for the drive to Braga. We will stop at the city of Braga to visit the city center. The Braga Diocese is the oldest in Portugal and, in the Middle Ages, the city even competed with Santiago de Compostela in power and importance. You will have the opportunity to taste some delicious sweets at a well known cake-shop.

    After Braga city center we will proceed to visit Bom Jesus Sanctuary, an Italian inspired neo-classical design, integrates harmoniously with the landscape of northern Portugal. The baroque stairway leading to the top contains 17 landings adorned with symbolic fountains and allegoric statues.

    We will stop for lunch at the medieval village of Ponte de Lima and walk the Roman bridge that gave its name to this very ancient and very beautiful village, which received its first charter in 1125 from D. Teresa, the mother of the first king of Portugal a number of years before the foundation of the kingdom.

  • Palacio da Brejoeira, Moncao, Portugal
    The tour continues driving north to the Brejoeira Palace. Ex-libris of the Alto-Minho region, this is an outstanding neo-classical building of the 19th Century. You will learn from a certified guide the story of the palace and at the end enjoy walking and taking pictures in the gardens. The visit will end with the tasting of its famous white wine, Vinho Verde Alvarinho.

  • Viana do Castelo, Viana do Castelo, Portugal
    We will return to Porto stopping at Viana do Castelo to visit the city center. Situated close to the mouth of the river Lima the city was founded in the thirteenth century by D. Afonso III, the king of Portugal. Your Minho full-day tour ends with return transport to your Porto hotel.

This was the first of three tours we were to take with Pedro. Picked up outside our apartment we drove out of Porto into the Minho region, with its lush green countryside, in NE Portugal, and the city of Braga was our first stop. It is the 3rd largest city in Portugal, settled by the Romans in1BC, and has the first cathedral erected in Portugal, before the country was founded. These credentials alone, make a return visit necessary, because there is so much history around you to see and absorb, but our host was more intent on introducing us to the local bakery and to sample the cakes and sweets and to enjoy a coffee; culturally more relevant than taking photos! The itinerary is an impressive one - the spectacular baroque staircase with 17 landings at the Bom Jesus Funicular and Sanctuary and the Roman bridge at Ponte de Lima, to list just two, but it is the lunch with unlimited vinho verde in a small corner of the latter town, which Pedro had ‘discovered,’ that provided the most authentic experience…with no tourists in sight! This tour is a wonderful introduction to northern Portugal by one of their best ambassadors! Susan & Graeme (Australia) 5*
