If you are a fan of Michael Jackson’s music in any capacity—whether you grew up with it, recognize its cultural impact, or simply know a handful of his biggest hits—MJ: The Musical is absolutely worth seeing.
I went into the show not entirely sure what to expect. I knew the basics of Michael Jackson’s music and had a general understanding of his early life, but I didn’t do any advance research or watch previews beforehand. What I found was a production that stands apart from most jukebox musicals in the best possible way.
Typically, jukebox musicals can struggle with storytelling, often feeling like a loose collection of hit songs rather than a cohesive narrative. MJ is different. The story is focused, intentional, and surprisingly moving. The cast—both on Broadway and on tour—is phenomenal, particularly the performers playing Michael at different stages of his life. Within moments of stepping on stage, they fully embody him in a way that feels authentic rather than caricatured.
What truly sets these performances apart is that the actors don’t rely solely on vocal mimicry. They capture Michael Jackson as a person—as a dancer, singer, and conflicted artist—making the portrayal believable and deeply engaging. It’s some of the strongest acting I’ve seen in a jukebox musical.
The score, comprised entirely of Michael Jackson’s music, is used masterfully. One standout moment features his mother singing “I’ll Be There” following a confrontation with his father. In that context, the song transforms completely—it no longer feels like a pop hit, but rather a deeply personal lullaby from a parent to a hurting child. Moments like this show just how thoughtfully the music is integrated into the story.
The production design is elegant and effective. While the set isn’t massive, it’s intentionally open to allow space for the incredible choreography. Scene transitions are smooth, the lighting is striking, and subtle visual references—such as costumes reminiscent of iconic performances—add layers of nostalgia without feeling heavy-handed.
The ensemble is outstanding, including the young performers who portray Michael in his early years. Watching such young talent perform at such a high level is truly impressive. I saw this show with my teenage son, who is a Michael Jackson fan, and he was completely captivated—toe-tapping, leaning forward in his seat, and fully absorbed.
This is an excellent show for introducing younger audiences to Broadway, as well as for anyone who enjoys large-scale musicals with dynamic choreography and driving music. MJ: The Musical challenges traditional ideas of what Broadway can be, making it accessible, energetic, and emotionally resonant.
Because Michael Jackson’s music is so deeply woven into American culture, there’s something familiar for nearly everyone. That sense of recognition makes the show especially welcoming—and often that familiarity is the perfect gateway into live theater.
Overall, MJ: The Musical is a thrilling, heartfelt, and expertly crafted Broadway experience that appeals to longtime theater fans and first-time audiences alike

MJ the Musical at the Neil Simon Theatre in New York was an awesome experience. My husband and I only had 3 days to see the sights in New York and every evening we took in a play. MJ the Musical did not disappoint! The singing and dancing were superb. Samuel Nelson III was amazing as Michael Jackson. I forget how many hits Michael Jackson has! This show was packed with them! From the early years in the Jackson Five to the adult Michael with successes like Thriller or We Are the World. If you're on the fence about seeing this musical...get off the fence and into the audience. You won't regret !
