Sam Sharpe Square, Montego Bay, Caribbean This tour takes you to downtown Montego Bay. Your first 10 minutes stop will be at Sam Sharp Square. This area got its name from a freed slave who carried the same name and who led one of the bloodiest uprising in Jamaica on Christmas day in the year 1831. In this area, there is a statue of Sam Sharp and other slaves who were severely punished in the year 1832 for the Christmas day uprising that took place. Feel free to exit the vehicle and browse around. There is also the "Cage" which was originally constructed from wood in the year 1806. However, it was later reconstructed from bricks. The cage was used as a holding area for runaway Slaves who were held there until they were sent back to their plantations. It was also used as a holding area for vagrants and rowdy seamen who would get drunk and was behaving disorderly.

Our guide, Dale, was great! Very friendly and very knowledgeable about Jamaica's history and day to day life. He encouraged us to ask questions and he happily answered. I loved that we learned so much about Jamaica's history and how the people live. Very informative.

History is Jamaica was interesting, I thought we were supposed to stop for shopping. Our guide very quickly stopped at our request it but did not seem to be part of the tour. He did not summarize the tour before we departed. He was very nice but was more focused on personal problems than entertaining us.

Melton was a fantastic guide. In addition to all the items listed s being on tour, he showed us an incredible number of fruit trees, and sometimes picked a sample for each of us. I had never eaten an almond right off the tree before--incredibly delicious. The only plea for a tip was by a very young (7 or 8?) girl who went to the neighborhood school funded solely by donations and the community. I have trouble walking so tour guide helped me during the one area where you walked up to the school. He was so supportive, knowledgeable, and personable. I highly recommend tour & Melton.
