I recently completed a 7-day hike of Mt Kilimanjaro via the Lemosho Route, taking the 7-day option. We travelled from Australia, with only 3 of us on the trek, my son and his girlfriend, plus me. After much research by my Son, we decided to book through a local company called 'Ascend Tanzania', who are based in Moshi. This turned out to be the best decision ever, as Ascend Tanzania were absolutely flawless! From the beginning, we were in regular timely communication with our contact, who was available to answer any questions we had regarding the trek. Upon arrival in-country, we received a very thorough briefing the night before the treks commencement, by both a manager and the treks Lead Guide (Brighton) - this briefing immediately set my mind at ease, and I believed that we were in very capable hands. My belief turned out to be accurate. We had a total of 12 staff accompany us on this trek; one lead guide, one assistant guide, one cook and nine porters. I watched each of these individuals as the trek unfolded and was simply impressed with how they went about their roles, all working together for the one goal - to get the 3 of us to the summit safely!
I cannot speak more highly about the professionalism and attention to detail this working group displayed throughout our trek, from the very beginning when we departed on day one, to the summit at Uhuru, then back down to the treks' completion. Each night we'd receive a briefing about the day ahead, what we should expect, what we would need in our daypacks and a check of our oxygen/heart rate was conducted also.
The meals provided throughout the journey were plentiful and very tasty, with good variety, considering the isolation/accessibility. Sleeping tents were comfortable, with mattress provided, always set-up and ready for our arrival after each day.
I had been suffering from the effects of altitude sickness throughout the trek and the summit night 'push' was quite challenging because of this. The guides provided encouragement and were right by my side to ensure that the decision to continue was always the right one, they clearly knew how to judge a person's physical state and were extremely well measured in their approach with me, as the ascent unfolded. The team supporting us had hundreds of successful summits under their belt; this experience was clearly evident throughout the trek.
Ascend Tanzania also took care of all transfers, permits and other administrative requirements, leaving us to simply focus on enjoying the experience. It was great to take some time to get to know each of the crew too, to learn more about their backgrounds and soak up some of the Tanzanian culture!
Although I have travelled rather extensively, this is the very first review I have ever taken the time to write, such was the positive impact Ascend Tanzania had upon me. I would not hesitate to utilize them again, should I return to Tanzania! Many thanks to Brighton, Alen and the entire crew, for their professionalism, guidance, insight, all-round positivity and can-do attitude (Hakuna Matata!).
Some things to consider: we completed our trek in off-peak season, meaning we had fewer groups on the mountain. During peak times, our guides advised that it would be advantageous to have a 'private' toilet set-up, thus avoiding the public toilets which can become a little 'overused'. Any 'clean freaks' will appreciate the private toilet! It is also a good idea to take some small 'homely snacks', to give your body some familiarity throughout the trek, which may assist with 'regularity'. Trekking poles, take them! Ascend Tanzania provided a thorough briefing document prior to our arrival, which included expectations/guide for tipping of the crew (believe me, you won't hesitate to tip them once you see the work that they do!). Tips are usually given in USD and due to the isolation of the mountain, you need to ensure you have sufficient tips (including sufficient breakdown of denominations), pre-prepared and taken with you, so you can hand these out on the last night of your trek.
The Tanzanian people are so friendly, helpful and respectful, which made our experience all that much better. It is a beautiful country with many surprises. The people rely heavily upon tourism to ensure a livelihood, so be sure to support them where you can.
I cannot thank the team at Ascend Tanzania enough, for their efforts throughout our trek and would not hesitate to recommend them to anyone who was looking for a professional, organized and friendly service. Many thanks to the team! :-)
Regards
Mark (Australia)
