Mount Meru is often called Kilimanjaro’s little brother and while that may be true from an elevation point of view, it is steeper and less traveled than Kili. We had an amazing 4 day trip with our guides Sam and Eli who we organized through Safari Soles. For our family of 4, we had a supporting crew of 12 people, guides, porters, cooks, and our armed ranger who made sure we were safe from the Cape buffalo who are in the woods along the trail.
The hike is challenging but doable. It’s not technical and on days 1 and 2, we hiked for 4-6 hours to get to the huts where we slept and ate dinner. On day 3 (summit day), you’re up and going by 1am and after about 9 hours, you’ve reached the summit and are back at the saddle hut. There you take a nap and get some food before descending that afternoon to the lower hut. It’s and exhausting, but rewarding day. On day 4, you have a leisurely 3-4 hour walk down past a waterfall and through a beautiful area where we saw giraffe, warthogs, buffalo, monkeys, and more.
It was a fantastic experience for us all. Sam, Eli, and the whole crew were experienced, attentive, and supportive throughout the trek, making sure we were prepared for each days challenges and serving delicious meals along the way.
Bryson at Safari Soles helped us set up the trip and was instrumental in helping us navigate some self-induced complexity as we had a flight scheduled out of Kilimanjaro airport the same day we came off the mountain.
Big thumbs up to all involved!
