Tivua is absolutely gorgeous and we had an amazing day, from the moment our bus picked us up to when we got back to the hotel, tired and happy.
This was close to 5-stars! The one thing that brought the score down for us was that they announced a beginners' snorkelling trip as soon as we arrived - literally while some people were still getting off the boat - by the time we got changed into our bathers, the snorkelling gear had run out and we missed out. We were told that there would be more beginners' snorkelling after lunch, but there was about half an hour after lunch where we couldn't find a staff member to take us out. We only had about four hours on the island so it was disappointing. Someone finally came to help us (and others) and we got to go out with the amazing Wise who is kind, patient and gentle with first-time snorkellers. I had hoped to snorkel for at least 1-2 hours but we ended up getting about 45 minutes in the water before we were back on the boat to go home - they start loading everyone back on shortly after 3pm. Another hour or two on the island would have been ideal - just to really slow down and relax. By the time we got settled, went for a walk and a paddle in the shallows (reef shoes recommended if you want to walk in the water), had lunch and finally went snorkelling, the time just went too quickly. There was a glass-bottomed boat doing short trips - this was popular with families.
Lunch was great - three meats on the BBQ plus about eight different salads and breads. Soft drinks and water on the island seemed to be included in the ticket price, and other drinks were reasonably priced. Refreshments onboard were simple but good. The onboard singing and conversations were so much fun - the crew really work hard to create a friendly, welcoming and lighthearted atmosphere. Sala in particular was amazing at 'working the room' - chatting to everyone, remembering names, etc.
Was it worth AUD$150-ish per person? We think yes, overall.
Would we go again? Yes - without hesitation, though I wouldn't go in peak tourist season. We were fortunate on the day we went - only about 90 people onboard so there was room for everyone to spread out and there were more than enough shaded cabanas for everyone (each standard cabana appeared to have two upright chairs and one sunlounge). The other seating options aren't all that appealing - beanbags, the ground, a few picnic tables, benches and chairs etc. Sneaky tip: As soon as you arrive, head to the side of the island facing away from the jetty (1-2 mins walk) - there were several empty cabanas there on the day we went, and this part of the island is blissfully quiet. The reserved beachfront cabanas don't seem to offer anything except guaranteed shade and an extra sunlounge - definitely worth it if you're going in peak season, otherwise don't bother.
Next time I'll be in my bathers and ready to get out there snorkelling with the fishies as soon as my feet hit the island. I can't wait to go back again!
