This was supposed to be a highlight of our trip to Naxos but it turned out to be our most disappointing day. Although George is clearly an expert sailor and the boat was spotless, his attitude throughout was contemptuous, dismissive and arrogant. I understand that safety must come first, but he was incredibly controlling about who was allowed to sit where, whether we were allowed to use masks or snorkels, whose turn it was to steer. It felt like being back in school.
The actual content of the day was also a let-down. We were not given the opportunity to even discuss where we went, let along choose, and apparently it was not possible to use the sails at all, the whole day. So we just motored to the Rina cave where we were all shouted at to jump off the (still moving) boat. After a very quick swim in and out of the cave we were taken to lunch at George’s mate's tavern in Schinoussa where a mediocre meal for four cost us €150. There were no menus, no prices and very little choice – it was, frankly, a scam. My husband and I were charged €50 for one small fish, and my two kids were charged €25 for starters they did not want. (When we raised this with George afterwards he just said it was our fault for not checking.)
On the way back a few people in the group asked if we could stop for a swim, so George rather grudgingly pulled in to the bay by Alyko beach. But the boat was too far from the shore to do anything other than jump in, swim around, then get back on board again.
In all the day cost my family nearly €600. We would have had a much better time if we’d stayed on the beach.
