After a New Orleans French Quarter hotel pickup, travel to the starting location on the West Pearl River, in Slidell, Louisiana. Venture into the gift shop overlooking the Tupelo and Cypress swamp and check in for the tour. Be sure to take a look out of the back window to see if any backyard guests are lurking in the murky waters below. Don’t forget to use the restrooms before embarking on this 2-hour tour throughout nearly 70,000 acres of the Honey Island Swamp, a permanently protected wildlife preserve. While walking down the dock, embrace the excitement of seeing the moss hanging from the gnarled cypress trees and the sweet smell of wild azaleas in the air. There's an undeniable eagerness to explore. Listen intently to the captain’s tales of pirates, Bigfoot, and prehistoric creatures roaming the region while entering the primitive beauty of the Honey Island Swamp. Keep an eye out for alligators, herons, egrets, deer, feral hogs, nutria, raccoons, otters, turtles, and frogs — an abundance of wildlife along the banks and the in the murky waters. Or look up and out for bald eagles, owls, osprey, and other water fowl soaring through the skies. They could be visible one second and gone the next. Those touring Honey Island can easily see why Louisiana is known as the Fisherman’s Paradise. Passing through the Cajun village, where local fisherman reside, see them catching bluegill, redear sunfish, largemouth bass, and warmth. Thousands of pounds of crawfish are caught in these waters every season as well. All the tour boats are inspected and approved by the US Coast Guard. These small, custom-built, flat-bottom boats transport approximately 20-24 individuals each. They are operated by experienced local guides who interact with the guests and make the trip both enjoyable and exciting. With the journey back up the river, the captain leads the way to the original departure location. A New Orleans hotel drop-off closes the tour. Captain Mark was the perfect host for our Honey Island Swamp Tour. He was so knowledgeable and everything you would expect from a southern gentleman. We hit the best weather possible and saw many critters.

The transfer from the city accommodation went very well, with explanations about New Orleans on the way. The schedules were respected. Boat tour in the morning very interesting, our guide provided us with many explanations and we could see many animals. No waste of time. That was great!

I really enjoyed this tour. The tour operator responded within a reasonable timeframe whenever I reached out with questions. I did the first tour of the day. The tour operator was very helpful in helping me establish a pick up location. I was able to be picked up at Harrahs Hotel/Caesars Casino. There was street parking nearby but the pay to park wasn’t functioning so I parked in a nearby lot which I would suggest since the lots allow you to pay for longer periods of parking time. The driver was friendly and she offered suggestions for restaurants and places to listen to good live music. The check-in staff were very friendly. The check-in took place in a small gift shop that had some cool items for purchase as well as some drinks and snacks for purchase. The gift shop only accepted cash payments. So keep that in mind. There was a restroom at the gift shop which was convenient. I anticipated being overly hot on the tour but I was not and there was actually a nice breeze during some parts of the tour. There was no issue with mosquitos which was a plus. The tour guide was very nice and shared lots of information about the vegetation and animals at the swamp. The tour was very relaxing but also quite fun. Being around all of the greenery made for nice photos. We saw some cool birds including a large heron. We saw a couple of raccoons, some turtles, and lots of alligators. Apparently if you do the tour when the weather is colder, you may not see any alligators due to their hibernation. So that’s something to consider. Overall this was a great tour!
