In addition, the property’s 19th-century carriage house is home to the The Exchange Shop, originally founded in the 1881 by The Woman’s Exchange and one of the oldest women-led non-profits in the South.

Great tour told from the perspective of an urban slave…I learned a lot and would highly recommend it!

No matter what is believed Urban enslavement was just as brutal. The ironing and resewing of sleeves. The cooking 12-16 hours a day. The caring for the children, all children to about the age of five with you own child that could be sold by age 10 years old. Horrible. Sad. But the interesting revelation is that some.had been granted freedom and being enslaved for over 40 years and being sold to pay off debts and being bought back. I cannot ever imagine. It was a good historical tour. Loved the recipes.

It was very interesting to learn about the previous owners of this home, about urban enslavement, and the connection of previous family member’s ties to the Whitney Plantation. Very educational and would highly recommend.
