    Start the tour at the designated meeting point in New Orleans and journey to the historic Whitney Plantation, one of the antebellum estates located along the Mississippi River. You'll cross the Bonnet Carre Spillway, a flood outlet for the river, and see a panoramic view of Lake Pontchartrain on your way to the plantation. Pass by the Evergreen, Felicity and St. Joseph plantations, where rich crops of sugar cane, cotton, and indigo from these fertile lands once traveled to various ports of trade.

    Arrive at the Whitney Plantation, which dates back more than 260 years and is now a working museum dedicated to the understanding of slavery in the American South. Visit museum exhibits and restored buildings including historical slave cabins, some of which remain from the original 22 on-site. See the Big House, which is one of the finest surviving examples of Spanish Creole architecture in Louisiana, and learn about the daily life of former slaves at Whitney as recorded by the Federal Writers' Project.   • Guests visiting Whitney using a wheelchair will have access to the gift shop, restrooms, and museum. The plantation grounds are accessible; however, there are uneven gravel paths. The main house tour is not accessible to guest traveling in wheelchairs and is not required to be modified as it is a historic home; however, the first floor is accessible. Guests would be able to view the slave quarters, but would not have access to enter.

Our guide/driver, Dwayne, was great. He was cheerful, informative and helpful. The bus was very comfortable and cooled by air conditioning. I would recommend taking a snack and a bottle of water along because there is nothing but chips to eat at the plantation. The tour of the plantation is engaging and informative. Personal audio devices with headphones are free of charge and comprehensive in coverage. Worthwhile tour.

Our group spent about 3 hours on a self-guided tour of the Whitney Plantation property, on a Thursday afternoon. There were a few dozen visitors while we were there, but the property is so large that it felt like we had it to ourselves. We chose Whitney for our plantation tour due to the emphasis on slavery and slaves. It was slightly disappointing, maybe because my expectations were high. I thought that the exhibits inside the visitors center were very well done, the outdoor exhibits less so. Outdoors they clearly relied on the audio tour for interpretation rather than standing exhibits, and my headphones weren't working very well so I only caught part of it. Overall, there could have been much more visual interpretation. The buildings are a mixture of original structures and modern reconstructions, and are well maintained. More than a few were damaged by Hurricane Ida and are still being repaired so we could not go inside. Others were locked up with no explanation. And we were not permitted to go inside the Big House (except for basement level). So it was unfortunate and disappointing that so much was off-limits on the day of our visit. The best of the outdoor exhibits were the German Coast Uprising memorial and the children's memorial which were very powerful. Also, the landscape was beautiful and offered good photo opportunities. Whitney is administered by a nonprofit group and has on-site staff who help if necessary but don't get in your face. In addition to the interpretive exhibits, the visitors center also has a small gift shop and a bookstore with a great selection of books about slavery and regional topics. Logistically, our Gray Line Tour was excellent and hassle-free. Our driver, Alton, provided interesting commentary to and from Whitney and overall did a great job. The drive was over an hour from New Orleans but the trip was worth the time and effort.
