Before setting off from home I checked the parking situation at Durham station. According to LNER website parking for disabled is free. When we got to the station we found out it wasn't free and cost £7.50 I had already paid for my train tickets. The train journey went fine until we got to Newcastle. The bus we wanted to Grey's monument no longer existed. The monument is too far for me to walk. So we decided on the metro, except both lifts were out of order and I had to negotiate a very long flight of stairs down. The notice apologising for the inconvenience suggested we walk to the monument where lifts are available. If only I could! A long slow descent to the metro and another £10 return got us to monument. Altogether 2 hours after leaving home. If only I had driven to Newcastle. About£3t o £4 for diesel 20 minutes travel plus £5 for a couple of hours parking. Why on earth did I put myself through using public transport? If you want to increase the strain take the train!
