There is only one thing you need to know about this show: GO SEE IT! You don’t have to know anything about Back to the Future, or have to see the movie before seeing this musical, in order to enjoy it. It’s one of the best things you can do in NYC right now.
We attended the evening show on Aug 17 and sat in the Mezzanine, center of stage about 4 rows up. Perfect seats for us. The theater isn’t huge, but not tiny either. You can’t go wrong with any seat in this gorgeous Winter Garden theater, but sitting near the center is recommended. Expect to pay $90+ ea. Discounted tickets can be found at the TKTS box office in Times Square, but the actual theater’s box office can help you with pricing as well. Just ask. There were three of us, so it wasn’t cheap to attend, but I would gladly pay it all over again to see the show one more time. It was incredible.
I’m a BIG BTTF fan. I grew up with this movie and upon hearing that they were making it into a musical, kind of hurt my soul a bit. How possibly could they make this into a musical. There were hundreds of ways they could have screwed this up, but only one way that they could hit the target on the head this well. This is that show.
It plays true to the canon of BTTF and respects the spirit of the movie. One stage, the characters and acting are second to none. The new music flows well with the story and something that will resonate with Broadway fans all around. I loved how the actor who played Doc Brown made the character his own. It took me a few minutes to warm up to his interpretation, but I ended up loving his version. HIs chemistry with the actor playing Marty was tangible.
One of my favorite moments of the entire show is the moment George and Lorraine kiss at the dance. We all know it’s coming, but the way the audience is able to experience that moment, and see the “rest of the picture” that we don’t get to see in the movie, was incredible. Everyone in the audience gets goosebumps at that very moment. Incredibly well done and one of the purest moments in any Broadway show.
My wife sat next to a young family that had a 4-year old and a 7-year old. Those two young boys were captivated throughout the entire show. She said that she could hear them laughing and applauding throughout the event. If a theatrical production can capture their attention like it does the rest of us, this is something special indeed.
Don’t miss your chance to see this amazingly entertaining production. The special effects are cutting-edge and something you will never forget. 6 stars our of 5 if I could rate it as such! Roads? Where we’re going, we don’t need roads!
