The Kepler Track was custom-built for pure hiking pleasure. Its alpine vistas, rugged high country, deep gorges and tall beech forests make the Kepler one of our favourite NZ Must Do’s. Kepler Track highlights Climb to the peak of Mount Luxmore, 1472m, for a birds-eye view of Lake Te Anau & the town. Explore the stunning stalactites and stalagmites of the Luxmore Caves and soak up the beauty of grand alpine views that stretch on for miles. Hike through golden tussock high country and tall Beech Forests; and at night, listen for the sound of the morepork, a tiny native owl, or shrill whistles from the Brown Kiwi. The quintessential Fiordland hiking experience!

Booked in advance on what turned out to be a horrible morning weather wise. Boat was lovely and warm and protected passengers from the elements. Journey was great and driver professional and informative. Fortunately weather cleared up and we had a great walk back to Te Anau.

If you’ve not got the time, the energy or the interest in a three day hike carrying all your gear, this is the perfect way to experience a superb section of the Kepler Track. The water taxi leaves from the centre of town, then drops you right in the middle of a superb pierce of the Kepler Track with ferns, forest and streams, just metres back from the lake. You can then do a short walk and catch another boat back an hour later, or, walk to the Control Gates (about 90 minutes) and then either walk back to town or organise a bus or taxi, or keep walking, as we did, on to Rainbow Reach where a bus will collect you. The section to the Control Gates is flat and wide and anyone can walk it, and even the section beyond here to Rainbow Reach has minimal elevation. We’ve done this twice now and it’s a cheap, and wonderful day out.
