The Wētā Workshop Experience showcases the making of movie effects and props, from armour to weapons, creatures to costumes, make-up to miniatures. Meet your guide at the Wētā Cave store to begin your journey through the movie-magic world of Wētā Workshop! Explore props, costumes, and cool stuff From The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit to Avatar andDistrict 9: learn about props, costumes and creatures created for your favourite films. Interact with cool stuff from our creative departments and catch an artist at work on our tour stage. Enter our world of miniatures and modelmaking Discover the filmmaking technique of miniature effects and learn how they are built for hit TV and film productions. Wander through monumental miniatures from Thunderbirds Are Go and see how we fit an entire island, cityscape and mansion under one roof!

You can cancel up to 24 hours in advance of the experience for a full refund.
  • For a full refund, cancel at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time.
  • If you cancel less than 24 hours before the experience’s start time, the amount you paid will not be refunded.
  • Any changes made less than 24 hours before the experience’s start time will not be accepted.
  • Cut-off times are based on the experience’s local time.

The information about the amount of projects that Weta workshop have been involved in and all the different departments and what gets made. The only thing is that their was a lot of standing around and talking to some people while we had to wait for the group ahead of us to move on, so we became a little bored. Apart from that we were very amazed with what is produced at Weta workshop.

Kate was our tour guide and she was awesome. Super knowledgeable about all things LOTR plus she filled us in on some of the other 100 movies Weta has worked on. We really enjoyed her banter and quick wit, and we absolutely recommend a visit to the Weta cave. If you have time, grab a feed at "The Larder" which is about 200 metres up the road. Thanks Kate.

Great experience for Hobbit & LOTR fan. Extremely knowledgeable guide & presenters on tour. Unfortunately, but understandably, picture opportunities on tour very limited, but there was a photo opportunity at end. Highly recommended!
