I'm not a fan of leaving bad reviews however I feel obliged to on this occasion as I read all the previous great comments about chinatours.net and booked with them accordingly.
I have just arrived back from a 1 day tour with Chinatours.net. I paid $120 for my trip to the great wall and forbidden city, which was advertised a transit tour departing from Beijing International airport. I was staying in the Crowne Plaza just 2km away from the airport and Jenny in the office agreed to collect me on route as I was close by.
I was advised on booking that I would be collected by the tour at my hotel in the morning of the departure and that I would receive a confirmed collection time the day before. This didn't happen, and I had to chase Jenny on WhatsApp for a collection time, which finally provided at 6:30pm. I was advised at this point that my tour guide was a lady called Linda, and I would be collected at 6:20am from my hotel. Expecting the tour bus to pick me up on route from the airport, I was surprised when a local man turned up at my hotel at 6:20 with my name on a board who then insisted on dropping me off outside a hotel in the town centre with no explanation. To my relief, a tour bus arrived 20 minutes later with Linda and the rest of the group on board.
It was at this point that I discovered that everyone else on the bus had paid just $40 for their tour (vs my $120). I emailed Jenny to make sure I was on the right tour, and she told me that the additional $80 I paid was for a private ride into town to meet the tour bus. Given that I had not requested a private ride into town (as I had booked an airport transit tour) I was not happy with this rather large additional charge. Transport is very cheap in Beijing and a ride from my hotel into town in a taxi would be no more than $10 each way. So to charge me $40 each way was unacceptable and quite frankly, daylight robbery.
Seeing as I had not requested a tour departing from the city in the first place, or a private ride, I disputed the charge.
As a goodwill gesture I agreed that I would pay the local rate of $10 each way as a but not $40 each way and that I would like a refund for the difference ($60). Jenny advised she would be prepared to refund me only $40 on the proviso that I paid for my own journey home from the city centre after the tour.
This was not a fair resolution in my opinion as I never asked for a private ride in the first place, nor did I book a tour departing the city centre. In the end I had to get the subway (a 1 hour journey) back to my hotel after the tour just to receive a few dollars (after bank charges) refund.
I don't believe that Chinatours.net are reasonable with their prices, nor are they forthcoming or transparent about what their charges are for. I paid double the price of that everyone else paid and I had to get the subway back to the airport! All in all quite a miserable experience.
