    Meet your driver at 7:30 am in your hotel lobby. It is about 90 mins ride (75 KMs) from Beijing downtown to parking at Mutianyu Wall. The Mutianyu Wall was built on a ridge between 600 and 1,000 meters above altitude. It is mainly made of slabs of granite. It measures 23 feet (7 meters) to 26 feet (8 meters) in height, and 4 yards (4 meters) to 5 yards (5 meters) in width. Built in 1404 is designed to block Mongol army to south aggression, but now is just the opposite, More foreigners tourists are attracted than blocked pass. Just Five minutes by chairlift up from the entrance at the foot of the mountain to the 6th Watch Tower on Great Wall. Standing on the ancient Wall, you can get a clear view of the few houses in the villages to the south of the wall, and on a good weather you can get a vague view of the tallest building in the far Beijing city, the Chinese Zun. On the north side of the Great Wall are mountains with no edge. it is about 300-500 meters distance each Watch Tower on the Wall. You can see the whole section Mutianyu Wall when you Standing on a watch tower. The Flat section Wall was built from Watch Tower 6th to 9th, suitable for seniors and children to walk, the steep section from Watch Tower 6th to building 1st. for some hikers, you can try hiking 2 hours to 19th Watch Tower if you have enough energy. After a ample time hiking and satisfying photos, you will take the awesome toboggan ride down from the 6th watch tower. There are some Chinese restaurants or Subway restaurant around the Wall. Or you can bring some Snacks and fruits for your own lunch. Your driver will provide bottled drink water for free of charge. Back your meeting point and your driver will bring you to hotel in Beijing directly about 2 pm.

I visited Mutianyu with a friend on a cold morning (-9C), Beijing was just recovering from COVID wave. Our guide Mark was very considerate to pick up us from hotel and arranged trip with tickets for entry, shuttle and cable car, as well as tips for hiking. We had a great experience at Mutianyu since there were very few tourists due to cold weather and our early arrival. The views are fantastic with snow covered bricks and panoramic mountain view. The grand scale and beauty are hard to describe by words. We were able to hike to the end tower of the restored Great Wall (it is possible to hike the original wall beyond that point but we didn’t try). Afterwards we had lunch in local restaurant serving fresh cooked fish “农家乐”, Mark told us we were the first tourist after China reopened border after 3years pandemic. Overall we had great experience visiting Mutianyu and wish Mark good luck in 2023!

We were collected from our hotel promptly as requested on Christmas day. We were then driven through the snow to Mutianyu in total silence. Arriving at the underground car park we followed the driver to the ticket office where he arranged the cable car tickets and gave us a 'very' brief overview of the wall i.e. which tower to walk back to. We were then pointed in the direction of the bus that ran to the cable car and left to our own devices, arranging to meet him three hours later. The morning on the wall was fantastic in the snow on Christmas day. However, this was not a private tour with English speaking driver. This was a glorified taxi with a driver that spoke some English, and an expensive one at that. We stayed at a five star hotel in Beijing and they would have charged less for the hotel car and driver for five hours.

If you're looking for a private driver to the Great Wall and customized pickup time, this is it. We got free waters. There was little to no conversation with our driver about the country/site, nor was there any assistance like others tours where their guide accompanied them on the journey for photos. We paid for our own tickets, too, that are not included in this package (the ski lift & toboggan ride) , so there are other costs to be aware of. It's a little pricey but we got to the site when we wanted to, which was at opening time around 9AM.
