The view and location is worth the long drive outside of Beijing. It’s a nice break from the city and a great way to experience another part of the Great Wall. Gubei Water Town is also a lovely backdrop for the wall and is a pretty experience as well. We didn’t realize that many people spend the night in the water town so if you have the time, it would be a nice option. Our tour guide was nice and informative and took pictures of us. The only downside was that we were nearly sprinting back down from the wall to get to dinner and then back to the car. The water town is beautiful at night with all the lights and we didn’t get a chance to really appreciate it. Dinner was delicious but it definitely ruined the romantic mood to have the tour guide eating dinner with us. I usually travel solo and having company would have been nice in that situation but I was with my boyfriend so that felt a bit odd. All in all though, this was a unique way to see another section of the wall and at a different time of day. Crowds were pretty low during the day in the water town and increased slightly on the wall in the evening but nothing compared to other sections of the wall.
