San Antonio Arrazola, Oaxaca, Oaxaca, Mexico Welcome to Arrazola, the vibrant heart of alebrije craftsmanship! Today, we'll explore a workshop where these fantastical creatures come to life.
As we enter the workshop, the air is filled with the scent of freshly carved wood and the sight of colorful paints. Our host, a skilled artisan, greets us warmly and begins by explaining the origins of alebrijes. These whimsical creatures, often a blend of various animals, are carved from copal wood, a material native to the region.
Our tour starts with the selection of the wood. The artisan shows us how they choose pieces of copal based on their shape and size, envisioning the creature that will emerge. Using machetes and knives, they skillfully carve the wood, allowing the natural form to guide their creativity.
The artisan shares stories of how this tradition has been passed down through generations, preserving the cultural heritage of the community.
