    Also known as Dona Amélia Garden in honour of the former queen of Portugal, the Funchal Municipal Garden is conveniently located in the city centre, north of Avenida Arriaga, on the site where the São Francisco Convent once existed. The convent’s coat of arms has survived until today and is displayed on one of the lawns. The garden overflows with flora from Madeira and many other parts of the world. It covers an area of 8,300 m² and has a lake and stream populated with fish and birds. There are also some works of art and an auditorium that serves as a venue for cultural activities.

It is divided into a number of smaller plazas and stairways that are used as sales venues.

Excellent informative likeable guide. Apologies we didn’t catch her name but we went on the 10.00 am tour on 5 June. Lots of info about the history of Madeira told with humour. She answered all our questions and was extremely knowledgeable. Would recommend the tour to anyone seeking more information about the history of Funchal and Madeira.

Nice walk, but I did expect more history and it was just too littke. Ok, the young volunteers were very nice, but on a gap year so all history was learned. I actually did expect a native Madeiran with all the knowledge.

Not the best walking tour. Guide didn’t give a good representation of Funchal an example saying the farmers market was a rip off also warning us of over priced restaurants. Not a lot of information given one very pretty street with murals on each door no information as to why they were painted. Tour may have gotten better as we left it early.
