    Its star attraction is the Vaux le Vicomte Castle – the impressive Baroque chateau that allegedly inspired the Palace of Versailles – so hop off your coach and head inside for your audio-guided tour.When you arrive, you are free to explore independently using your provided audio guide. See elaborate interiors and vaulted cellars, and learn about the man behind this massive home, Nicholas Fouquet, who was King Louis XIV’s minister of finance. After Fouquet commissioned Vaux le Vicomte to be designed by a top architect, the king felt upstaged and threw the minister in jail. When you’re finished inside, walk outside to discover the castle’s 99 acres (40 hectares) of grounds made up of fountains, flowerbeds and sprawling lawns. If you’re hungry, grab some lunch from the onsite café (own expense) before returning to the coach.

We are experienced, curious, non-complaining travelers who have used Viator many times and have been satisfied. This one fell way short of the mark. For $132/person you get a bus ride, admission, and audio guide. This is self-guided, no professional guide. They don’t tell you that up front. The tour is too long by several hours, over 4 hours just at Fountainbleau with 2 1/2 hours for lunch. Really? The tour ends ar Vaux de Vicompte at 5:00; just in time for an excruciating crawl back to the drop-off point. Arrived at 7:00 pm, a 10+ hour excursion, mostly riding the bus or killing time. Nobody was happy with the experience. I wouldn’t waste my money, go out for a nice dinner instead.

Too much time at Fontainebleau. Audioguide didn’t work. Less time at each place. No tour guide. We left at 9:15 and returned at 6:30.

This is just bus transportation. Upon arrival, no directions or guidance, don’t try to ask the driver. We were unsure he would even do a headcount before leaving to second location. Audio guides are included in price- long winded for Fontainebleau but excellent at Veaux de Vicompte.
