    By the 17th century, the cemeteries in Paris were overflowing. And so, the solution became to place the corpses' remains in the tunnels that existed beneath the streets of Paris since the 13th century. Originally, the French Catacombs were mines or ossuaries for extracting the limestone that built Paris. As the city expanded, it eventually covered areas with mines underneath. Sound like bad planning? That's because it was not planned at all. Many of these mines were abandoned and undocumented.The solution to bury the dead underground fixed more than simply the lack of cemetery space. The estimated six million dead bodies actually reinforced the mines.

This was one of the best parts of our trip to Paris! Leo was so amazing and knowledgeable, and honestly we wouldn't have learned half the things we did about the Catacombs had we not gone on the tour with her. You can tell that she is really passionate about this piece of Paris' history. The whole tour was so interesting and having so much great context really made our trip to the Catacombs that much more incredible. Make sure to request Leo as your guide if you can, 10/10 would recommend!!

We booked in January when the cancellation policy was a "cancel for any reason". Our tour was cancelled because of COVID and we were told to "fill out a credit request". We were told it would be addressed 7 days before tour was scheduled because they were overwhelmed. Now we have been emailed saying they have changed their refund policy. I didn't realize you could change your refund policy AFTER I booked! I am filing a complaint with the BBB and credit card company for my $451. I realize everyone has suffered through this crisis, but the shady way it was handled was unacceptable.

We had an amazing trip down into the Catacombs with Leo. She is a great guide and considers herself a "Cataphile" having explored much of the Catacombs herself she is intimately aware of the history and significance it plays in Parisian history. The tour is not to be missed and having a guide along with "skip the line" made it even better. We got caught in some of the Gilets Jaune protests where many streets were blocked off. The Tour Guy called me to check on us and directed us right to the front door where we met Leo. Thank you!!
