The history of the Château d'Amboise dates back to the 11th century, when
the Count of Anjou built the castle on the promontory, surveying the Loire River, as a defence strategy. Between the 15th and 16th centuries , under the orders of Charles VII, Louis XII and Francois I, the castle was refurnished. Its magnificent facade can be attributed to Charles VIII and Francois I, and their love for Italian art and style. It was because of this passion for Italian art that Francois I invited Leonardo Da Vinci to come and reside in Amboise as his first painter, architect and engineer. Da Vinci arrived in 1516 and spent the remaining three years of his life living and working in the nearby Chateau du Clos Lucé (connected to the royal chateau by an underground passage). Leonardo Da Vinci died in Amboise and was buried in the Chapel of Saint-Hubert (on the ramparts of the Chateau d'Amboise).

Both Victor and Vincent were great hosts for our tour of 8 to the Loire Valley. We needed two vehicles, both of which were very comfortable and we learned a lot about French history and culture on our way from Paris. It was certainly a full day of great wine and food and the choice for lunch was absolutely fantastic. 2 wineries and 1 chateau proved to be a great balance for a day trip. Both hosts were prompt and safe drivers. I recommend not planning anything else for your day as it's a full 12-hours or so.

Worth the time and money. The pick up and drop off at your hotel is a very valuable thing to have. Our guide, Larisa was the best! The drive out to the Chateau is about 2.5 hours, but the drive back into Paris is 3 hours since the vineyard you visit is a bit further away. The lunch is wonderful, the staff there was very friendly and helped us make decisions on the menu that you choose your food from for the tour. You will truly experience French cuisine here! Snails, souffle, duck liver, and plenty of wine. We had the catch of the day which they didn't tell us what that exactly was until we were done. I will leave it at that, but when we googled it in the car we thought - WOW, we ate that!? Have an open mind, enjoy the travel time and good wines at the vineyard.
