We stopped off here as part of our Peru tour. It was a great opportunity to get up close to Vicuna, the national animal of Peru. For a long time, the hunting of Vicuna was unrestricted and the numbers decreased rapidly. Between 1964-68 this nature reserve has been created and Vicuna hunting was made illegal. The Vicuna numbers have now rapidly increased although they still are at risk from poachers. Vicuna wool is the most expensive in the world, mainly because it can only be collected once every three years; it is extremely soft. It was lovely to see them in a natural habitat .
