Tucked under the tawny skirts of formidable foothills about 15kms/9.3 miles north of Cusco as the condor flies, via a narrow road and hairpin turns, the Sacred Valley holds its head high. The valley has long been the home of attractive colonial towns, handicraft markets and lofty 10th and 11th century Inca Citadels of Pisac, Ollyantaytambo and Urubumba. Visiting the Salt Mines and Moray terraces which were made by building containment walls filled with fertile earth. They were watered through a complex irrigation system. At the base of the terraces, there is a rain water storage system. Explore amazing ruins and the fabled Lost City of the Incas, Machu Picchu. The Inca City of the Historic Sanctuary of Machu Picchu is the articulating center of its surroundings, a masterpiece of art, urbanism, architecture and engineering of the Inca Civilization.

The Inca trail was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had and SAM travel Peru helped to make it so. The porters were incredible, the guide and chef fantastic and the company helped to organise our transport to make it super convenient for us by dropping us at our hotel in the sacred valley at the end. Our chef Timoteo was a genius, the food was delicious and full of surprises that I don’t want to ruin for others, but let’s just say it shouldn’t have been possible on a mountain! JP was the best tour guide I’ve ever had. Nothing was too much trouble for him. He was clearly so passionate about his work and he took us on a journey through the trail building up to Machu Picchu. His enthusiasm and knowledge were second to none and he was a brilliant storyteller. Thank you so much to everyone at SAM travel for making it such a brilliant experience!

The trip itself was great. Our guide was very knowledgeable about everything and was able to explain things well. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is because they messed up my lunch (I asked for vegetarian but was given chicken) and the hotel they picked is directly next to the train tracks, so you can hear trains late into the night and early in the morning. I also didn’t really like that they gave us shirts but didn’t actually ask for sizes. Now I just have an extra shirt that I’m never going to wear.
