The tour offers the opportunity to discover two splendid towns, which testify the vast artistic and architectural heritage of Sicily. Starting with the visit of the stunning “Villa del Casale”, constructed between the third and sixth century BC in Piazza Armerina. To end in the ancient town of Caltagirone, its name deriving from the Arabic ‘Cal’at Ghiran’ or ‘Castles of Jars’, which emphasises the importance of its ceramic and Majolica production.

Villa del Casale represents one of the most magnificent testimonies of the late Roman age, rich of architectural and decorative elements.

    In Caltagirone you will visit the ancient Cal’at Ghiran, or the Castello dei Vasi, a name that underlines the centrality of ceramics and majolica production typical of Caltagirone. A tour of the historic center will make you appreciate the beauty of buildings and monuments such as: Palazzo Gravina, the Norman basilica of San Giacomo, the cathedral of San Giuliano, Corte Capitaniale, Tondo Vecchio, to culminate with the spectacular staircase of Santa Maria del Monte composed of 142 steps covered by majolica that connect the upper part to the lower part of the city.

Die Treppe ist im Grunde sehr schön, aber bräuchte dringend eine Restaurierung.... Der ganze Ort Caltagirone ist extrem verwahrlost, schmutzig und heruntergekommen, obwohl die Anlage der Stadt sehr malerisch ist. War echt trostlos!

Two beautiful towns in one day, very well designated. Our driver was on time, very polite, and give us some background of the city. However, we had a drive more than a guide, because the most important part of the tour was the Villa of Rome, but we were on our own, and there’s no tour or audio guide on site.
