Marine Biology Experiences for families

Our family of 7 reserved this with trip advisor a week prior to our visit to Akumal. Angela was lovely, and very knowledgeable about sea turtles. She and another guide, Carrie, fitted us with masks and snorkels, and took us swimming in the roped in area off Akumal Beach. We saw 4 very large green turtles; one of which was about 3 feet long and hosting 2 large remoras on his shell. We also saw a cushion sea star and many colorful fish, as well as an eel. Angela is a very accommodating guide. She spread a blanket on the sand for the educational part of her talk, and provided snacks after our snorkel. She also had a colleague on the beach who watched our phones for us while we were in the water. We also appreciated her concern for the ecosystem, as she advised us to apply sunscreen at least an hour in advance or, better yet, to wear reef safe sunscreen for our swim. I highly recommend snorkeling with Angela (you need to snorkel with a certified guide off Akumal Beach), & look forward to booking with her again next year!!

We happened upon Angela’s class within hours of disembarking our flight. We’d dropped off our bags and started our six month Mexican winter with a dip in the ocean. As soon as we got to the beach, several children started to arrive with marine biology T-shirts on. Our 8 year old daughter loves to meet new friends and instantly started playing with them. Then after a few minutes Angela arrived and all the children ran off to join their class. After some enquiries, we were able to set up a spot for our daughter for the next course. She was thrilled. Months later our daughter had attended many courses, one day meet-ups and excursions. The whole family of marine biologists became fast friends and we parents loved our time on the beach just as much as the kiddos. There was always something new to find and learn about, new friends to play with and just great community. We will definitely keep going when we return for our next winter break. We had so much fun on this trip. We have 2 teens, 2 adults and 3 children ages 4-10, everyone feels this was the best excursion we had in Akumal. Angela is so responsive, informative and engaging. We all learned so much about the sea life in the area and also how to do our part to protect the sea life. On our snorkel tour we saw multiple sea turtles, an eel, octopus, sting rays and various fish. She provides snorkels and life jackets and brings an inner tube for those who get tired. We loved seeing all of the wildlife. After the snorkel she provided snacks and juice, taught us about sharks, and brought crayons and face paint for the kids. They loved painting each other’s faces and drawing the sea life they saw. The beach area is beautiful and crystal clear and there are restaurants and snack bars on the beach if you wanted to play at the beach afterwards. I HIGHLY recommend this trip for families, it was an educational and beautiful experience. Thank you Angela for the memories!
