On this tour visitors can expierience the life of allied prisoners who lived in the camp during WW2. In 1944 more then 70 prisoners escaped from the camp but only 3 of them menaged to escape successfully. Thi tour is not only a chance to see the Museum of the camp but also to pay respect to those who died there. In the museum you can see full-size replica of the hut where the men planned their daring mass escape, and displaying many original items from the prison camp. About a half-mile drive from the hut you can also see the “Harry” tunnel dug by the prisoners (one of three tunnels dug: Tom, Dick, and Harry), which now serves as a memorial. Here you can see exactly how long the tunnel was and the exit and entry points. A guard tower has been reconstructed to show the proximity of the tunnel exit to the attentive German soldiers on patrol. You are also able to wander through the woods and see some of the original foundations of the camp.

Great tour for WW2 history buffs and those interested or with a connection to The Great Escape. The visit to the museum with its replicas and memorabilia is very interesting but I recommend you arrange a tour with one of the volunteers. I was unable to do so and let with a few unanswered questions. A short drive away is the original site of the Stalag Luft 111. Although only ruins and foundations remain, it is worth the short trip to get an idea of the size of the barracks and, particularly as the route of the tunnel, Harry, has been marked upon the surface in concrete and gives an amazing insight into the ingenuity and courage the soldiers exhibited. Also note that the museum is approximately 2 hours drive from Wroclaw so be ready for a few hours in the car. Fortunately, it is a pleasant drive and my driver, Gregory, was great company, and kept me informed of any interesting landmarks etc. as well as chatting about our mutual love of sport and travel. The venue was very interesting, well organised and, to a degree, somewhat poignant. The driver arrived exactly in time and was very good.
