If you were wondering what is the best time to visit Pompeii this is the answer! Some days there are more visitors in Pompeii than the people that used to live there. The best time is the last couple of hours before closing time when heat and crowds start to diminish - all the visitors from cruise ships start to leave (usually at four) - and the warm orange colour of the waning sun gives to Pompeii a magical atmosphere.

We visited on a very hot day and this 2-hour tour was so interesting and engaging the time passed so quickly! Alex is a fantastic storyteller and had our group of two adults and four teens completely engaged. We referenced things we learned with Alex for the remainder of our time in Italy and it felt like the foundational tour for all the other history we learned in Rome and beyond. If you can make this late afternoon tour you will not be disappointed. We visited the amphitheater and had it to ourselves and could hear the echo of our voices in the acoustics.
