The hours just before sunset offer the best time for paddling on the waters of Casco Bay. The sky tends to explode with color and the seas often become glassy and calm. This trip involves a leisurely paddle just far enough along the waterfront or into the islands to enjoy a panoramic view of the sun setting over the city as we paddle back to the East End Beach.  This two-hour tour is designed for paddlers of all experience levels -- including first-time kayakers. The exact route you take will depend on the weather conditions and the group's interests and experience, but the Sunset Tour often starts out venturing into the waterfront of Portland harbor, and then into the open waters towards the islands of Casco Bay. We will cancel this tour if there is steady rain, strong winds or other conditions that we believe will prevent guests from having a great paddling experience. However, we will run our tours when there are light showers, overcast skies or cooler than average temperatures.

  • Most participants will be given tandem (two-person) kayaks unless they request a solo kayak
  • Please dress appropriately for the weather conditions. It is usually cooler on the water than on land.
You can cancel up to 24 hours in advance of the experience for a full refund.
  • For a full refund, cancel at least 24 hours before the scheduled departure time.
  • If you cancel less than 24 hours before the experience’s start time, the amount you paid will not be refunded.
  • Any changes made less than 24 hours before the experience’s start time will not be accepted.
  • Cut-off times are based on the experience’s local time.
  • This experience requires good weather. If it’s canceled due to poor weather, you’ll be offered a different date or a full refund.

Very pretty view. Unfortunately only one seal was out and about that night. I would recommend dressing warm/wearing water resistant clothing as the water is very cold . Also, request single kayaks if you are experienced kayakers. The tandem or "divorce boat" was not as much fun.

It was a lot of fun. Just remember to bring a watch to keep track of the time. You are responsible for that.

My wife and I had a wonderful time Kayaking Casco Bay. It's a gorgeous area and the equipment was high quality and well maintained. My only negative is that the guide did not describe much of what we were seeing. We paddled around Fort Gorges, but were offered no description or history of it. However, he did point out some wildlife and answered questions we had knowledgeably. Finally, it's worth noting there was a large range of abilities in our group and we frequently had to slow down or stop to let the group catch up. This is more to do with the fact that we are experienced Kayakers and certainly not Portland Paddle's fault. Overall, it was a great trip and I would recommend it to others.
