On this walking tour through the Serra Devassa, we will encounter several small lagoons, not being possible to know them by car or 4WD. Serra devassa, is one of the two volcanic complexes existing in Sete Cidades and where the third highest point of the island of São Miguel is located, take the opportunity to get to know, some of the natural fauna and flora of the island of São Miguel.

    It is a picturesque place, if we arrive at the place on the day and at the right time, it will certainly be one of the most beautiful lagoons in São Miguel, inserted in the middle of an immense vegetation of Cryptomeria, the lagoons are garnished with azaleas giving a unique color in the spring. The Empadadas Lagoon are two small lagoons, with little depth and that are very close to each other is to take a short walk around it.

  • Miradouro da Boca do Inferno, Sete Cidades, Portugal
    Located in the protected area of the Canary Lagoon, it is by many the most stunning and emblematic place on the whole island of São Miguel, this viewpoint is located at the top of the caldera of the Sete Cidades, where we can, with the weather conditions in our favor, have a almost 360º panoramic view, in which we can see the blue lagoon of Sete Cidades, Lagoa do Canário and Lagoa Rasa, although its access is not easy, for those who have difficulty walking, as you have to climb a little with a small incline accentuated.

Very surprised when we had our own personal walking guide, quite a steep start to the walk but well worth it walked around 6 1/2 miles stopping for a snack lunch, there where very few others around except for the main viewpoints, a great way to see Sete Cidades all 7 lakes. Another passionate guide who loves his home and career.

The Island of São Miguel is beautiful. This volcanic island has many lakes and one more beautiful than the next. The only downside is; the weather changes quickly and you may miss the view from the top. Also depending on the sunlight the color changes. We had to go twice, first time the view was blocked.

We did our private tour around the island with the car. Carlos, our driver brought us to different view points to see Sete Cidades site. It was around noon time, the weather was sunny and calm, we got lucky for having amazing view (it doesn't happen every time as there might be very foggy with little or no view at all). Twin lakes looked beautiful surrounded by mountains and Japanese ceders. We expected to see green and blue lakes as shown on all advertising pictures. Green lake looked really green, unfortunately "blue" one was also kind of greenish. Maybe it depends of light reflection and lake will look blue at sunset?
