    It is believed that the evangelist St. John had spent his last years in the region around Ephesus and buried in the southern slope of Ayosolug Hill. Three hundred years after the death of St. John, a small chapel was constructed over the grave in the 4th century. The church of St John was changed into a marvelous basilica during the region of Emperor Justinian (527 -565 AD). The second half of the first century was full of persecution for the early Christians.Apostle James and Stephen were killed in Jerusalem.Paul was sent to Rome and executed. According to tradition John took The Mother Mary and came to Ephesus.He wrote his Gospel in Ephesus and the Revelation in Greece Island, Patmos in 96AD.

  • Meryemana (The Virgin Mary's House), Selcuk, Turkey
    House of Virgin Mary is located on the top of the "Bulbul" mountain 9 km ahead of Ephesus, the shrine of Virgin Mary enjoys a marvelous atmosphere hidden in the green. It is the place where Mary may have spent her last days. Indeed, she may have come in the area together with Saint John, who spent several years in the area to spread Christianity. Mary preferred this remote place rather than living in crowded place. The house of Virgin Mary is a typical Roman architectural example, entirely made of stones. In the 4th century AD, a church, combining her house and grave, has been built. The original two-stored house, which consisted of an anteroom (where today candles are proposed), bedroom and praying room (Christian church area) and a room with fireplace (chapel for Muslims).

This tour was and outstanding experience. Our guide Erkan was exemplary. His patience, kindness, and knowledge made this experience undoubtedly even better than the sites already were, and I would recommend him to any group. Firstly, we were picked up by a private driver and Erkan at our hotel. Due to the poor car accessibility to the Old Town L’Agora Hotel we had a short walk through the alleys to the car. Once we arrived at the car the AC was blasting in the car which was amazing (it was 107 degrees). During our hour and a half long drive to Ephesus, Erkan spoke to our group the entire ride with a superior command of the English language. Erkan, being a local to a town nearby Izmir possessed a detailed knowledge of both the city and agricultural landscape. Our tour would travel to the house of the Virgin Mary, Ephesus, Turkmen carpets (for lunch), and St. John’s church. Throughout each site Erkan gave us detailed historical accounts and kindly answered our obscure questions. At each stop Erkan was conscious of providing cold water and stopping in the shaded areas to give us information about the sites. All in all the trip was amazing, but Erkan went above and beyond to be the best tour guide we’ve had during our holiday in Turkey. I would recommend this trip to any able bodied individuals, that are interested in ancient cities, religious history, mythology, and Turkish culture. Thank you Erkan

The private trip was amazing! Our tour guide Necla is a very proficient and knowledgeable lady, showing us around the ruins, patiently explaining every details. The most important thing is the flexibility, we can arrange our own itinerary and visit as much as we want. It’s absolutely amazing. Also, the vehicle is clean and spacious, with fully functional aircon and excellent driver!

our tour guide Ali was fantastic and knowledgeable about all topics related to Turkey - the flag, sports, culture, food, sport, history, religion and more. We had a full day that ran smoothly and was packed with fun in a comfortable vehicle. Our driver was also great. I would strongly recommend Ali!
